If you are just beginning in the world of Internet Marketing, then SEO is a must and the foundation of all successful websites and Internet Marketing strategies.

SEO is an acronym that stands for Search Engine Optimization or quite often referred to as Organic Search Engine Marketing or Listings or Placements.  You will find many of these variations going around as you speak with SEO experts and read various forums.  Some of the terms and phrases you will hear that all relate to SEO are:

  1. Search Engine Optimization.  This is of course the actual meaning of this acronym.
  2. Organic Search
  3. Organic SEO
  4. Organic Placements
  5. Organic Lisitngs
  6. Organic Search Marketing
  7. Organic Results
  8. Others…

All these different variations are really saying is free, natural, search engine placements.  It really started back to pre-Google advertising days.  You see prior to Google, Yahoo, and Bing offering sponsored (paid) text ad links at the top of their search results, those placements used to be free.  That’s right in fact that was even before Google much less Bing even existed.

You would type in ANY search term in Yahoo or Google and find free listings at the top of the search results.  After Google incorporated the concept of paid search into their top search results as Yahoo started with Overture (formerly Go-To) they needed a name for what used to just be getting good search engine rankings.  So the title Organic was adopted for free search engine results, listings, placements however you like to refer to them.
